To automatically discover mail server connection settings upon entering just your email address, clients such as Thunderbird download an XML file at ''%%http://autoconfig.emailaddressdomain/mail/config-v1.1.xml?emailaddress=emailaddress%%''[(https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Autoconfiguration)].

You also need to configure the corresponding [[admin:dns|DNS]] entries, usually a CNAME for ''autoconfig.example.com'' (where example is the mail TLD after the ''@'')

For Outlook / Office 365 it looks like this:

Where mail.contoso.com is your Outlook server namespace.
